2yo purchase Sculcos Folly, a son of our old friend Redesdale owned by Michael Dubb, turned in another exceptional performance to take the Mike Lee Stakes at Saratoga.
Remarkably, Sculcos Folly wasn’t extended by Jaime Rodriguez to win by five lengths. Trained by Rick Dutrow, it was the sixth win in eight starts for the colt and third at stakes level following similarly dominant displays in the Gander and Mind Your Biscuits Stakes. He now boasts earnings of $370,000.
“I was a little bit worried because I was handicapping the race and we had a little bit of speed outside,” jockey Jaime Rodriguez told the press. “[Dutrow] didn’t give me any instructions. He said, ‘you know the horse already. You know what to do. You’ll figure it out when the gate open. We got maybe three feet outside, one of the speed got left and I had the advantage just to use him a little bit early and get a position in the beginning. Once I got next to him, I just let him get a little bit ahead in front and then I just let him do his own thing. Once we hit the top of the lane I tapped him once on the shoulder and he just took off.”
Winning owner Michael Dubb added: “There are a lot of dark days in the winter and you really wait for days like this. A lot of hard work, a lot of planning and thinking of places and races. We agonized over where we were going to run the horse. We felt that he was good enough to run in the [GI] Woody Stephens [on Saturday]. Based on the performance he put on, he might have been competitive there, but at the end of the day, this is a 3-year-old and he’s got plenty of time to prove how good he is.”
Sculcos Folly is a son of Redesdale, a Speightstown relation to Danehill who won his first three starts for Chad having been bought as an unraced 3yo for just $18,000.
Sculcos Folly was a $70,000 purchase by Chad from Omar Ramirez’s draft at last year’s OBS April 2yo in Training Sale.
