Whether you are new to the industry or a current participant, Schumer Bloodstock can assist you. Please call or e-mail us to discuss the options.
Schumer Bloodstock Agency was formed in 1991 by Louisville, Kentucky native Chad Schumer as a full service firm dealing with the international market of buying and selling Thoroughbreds.
Early beginnings in bloodstock were trips to iconic Churchill Downs with his grandmother while just a child of five years. Initially disinterested, one day the switch flipped and he became enthralled with the other side of the business – not the gambling that drew his grandmother in, but rather the idea of pedigrees and where these thoroughbreds came from.
After deciding right then and there he wanted to pursue life in the bloodstock trade, finding out more about the industry was his quest. Back then a trip to the local bookstore would have him purchasing the odd Thoroughbred Record or Blood-Horse magazine. This eventually led to his attending the University of Louisville Equine Industry Program, part of the College of Business. Many years later, he was called back to the University as guest lecturer.
Now with over 25 years experience, we continue to advise and assist our clients worldwide in obtaining young stock to race, broodmares and stallion prospects to breed, pinhooking, mating recommendations and insurance services. Among the leading buyers at the venerable Keeneland sales, Chad has been ranked among the top purchasers of bloodstock each of the past few years.
We have done appraisals for some of the top professionals in the industry and even helped broker for the United States Government when their share of Curlin was made available for purchase.
With Chad’s vast knowledge of the international market, the agency is an established leader in the exportation of horses around the world. England, France, Ireland, Japan, Sweden, Germany, Canada, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Chile, Pakistan, Turkey, Libya, Thailand, Kuwait, Iran, Panama, Jamaica and Mexico are among the many nations in which our clients have been successfully represented.
Chad attends auctions throughout the world and visits farms and racetracks globally as well. Further, we are able to facilitate shipping and insurance as well to ensure a smooth transition of bloodstock anywhere.
Schumer Bloodstock takes pride in operating at every level of the market. 2019 was one such year, highlighted by the purchase of Miss Tapirado for $1.3 million at the Keeneland April 2yos in Training Sale and success of $6,000 yearling purchase Kenzai Warrior in the G3 Horris Hill Stakes at Newmarket.
Johanna joined Schumer Bloodstock as director of operations in September 2014.
She has a strong background in administrative support. However, she has also long held an interest in horses and welcomed the opportunity to combine the two. “It is the international aspect of Chad’s firm that I enjoy the most,” she says.
Fully embracing the role of customer service specialist, with an emphasis on client insurance needs, Johanna is looking forward to the exciting and new global opportunities ahead for Schumer Bloodstock.
Current clients know to look for Johanna in our Keeneland “office” in the large bar area. She is there ready, willing and able to assist in any way necessary. If you’re in town for the sales, please stop by and say hello!
Based in Newmarket, England, Nancy has assisted Chad Schumer on a regular basis at bloodstock auctions since 2005. She officially joined Schumer Bloodstock in January 2013 following a lengthy stint as member of the bloodstock department at the Racing Post in London, latterly as senior bloodstock correspondent.
Prior to that, Nancy worked a sales season at Watership Down Stud and contributed on a weekly basis to James Underwood’s European Racing and Breeding Digest.
Currently, she is bloodstock editor of Owner Breeder magazine, the official publication of the Racehorse Owners Association, Newmarket sales correspondent for European Bloodstock News (EBN) and a regular contributor to Thoroughbred Racing Commentary.
She also acts as a consultant in a private capacity to a number of leading international breeders and associations worldwide, notably Imad Al Sagar’s Blue Diamond Stud in Newmarket.
Nancy has long enjoyed pinhooking and continued to maintain a small group of broodmares in Europe and the US – with Chad, she co-bred recent stakes winners Tarpy’s Goal and Purging The Stone.
