Speed King, out of Schumer BS mare purchase Athenian Beauty, staked his claim for the Kentucky Derby with a front-running win in the G3 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Saturday.
The Volatile colt scored by a length to make it two wins from three starts for owner Triton Thoroughbreds and trainer Ron Moquett. In the process, he earned 20 points on the road to the Kentucky Derby.
Speed King was bred by Nancy Shuford out of Athenian Beauty, a winning Corinthian half-sister to stakes winner I’m A Dixie Girl, dam of G1 winner Mor Spirit. Athenian Beauty was bought privately in November 2023 and the Early Voting filly she was carrying at the time sold for $85,000.
