The win of Ole Crazy Bone in the Grade 2 KTDF Kentucky Turf Cup Invitational at Kentucky Downs capped a major day for Schumer Bloodstock graduates, coming hot off the heels of Dreaming Of Alys‘ win in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf in California.
Both are out of mares purchased by Schumer Bloodstock; Ole Crazy Bone is out of Southern Gem, bought for $120,000 in 2020, while Dreaming Of Alys is out of Grammajo, bought for $57,000 in 2023.
Quietly fancied for the Kentucky Downs Grade 2, Ole Crazy Bone was well-placed early and having stalked from outside, took the lead past the quarter pole and kicked clear for a near four-length win. Trained by Michael Maker for Flying P Stable, the son of Ghostzapper now boasts earnings of nearly $1.8 million and seven wins. The race was a ‘win and you’re in’ for the Breeders’ Cup Turf.
He is only the second foal out of Southern Gem, a stakes-placed daughter of Smart Strike.
“He’s a lovely horse,” said Michael Maker. “He looks like a Breeders’ Cup horse now! I thought Flavien got him in a good position and navigated the first turn well, once he did that I was pretty confident.”
In addition, Schumer Bloodstock yearling purchase Lagynos (pictured) ran an excellent race to finish second in the Grade 3 FanDuel TV Mint Millions Invitational on the same Kentucky Downs card to bring his earnings close to the $1.7 million mark; the Kantharos colt, who has won five races in total for Steve Asmussen, was purchased for $200,000 as a yearling.
Also on Saturday, Pretty Picture remained unbeaten in two starts for Chad Brown and Three Chimneys Farm; her dam Farofa was a $42,000 purchase with KGS at last year’s Keeneland November Sale while in foal to Maclean’s Music.
That’s to go with another win in Saudi Arabia for Waqtuk, a Not This Time colt who was purchased on behalf of current connections for $60,000 as a 2yo.
