Lagynos sets stakes record in new G3 win

Lagynos, a mere $200,000 yearling purchase by Chad Schumer, added a fourth consecutive win to his outstanding resume on Saturday when taking the Grade 3 Arlington Stakes in stakes record time at Churchill Downs.

The win, his 9th in total, pushed his overall earnings to just below $2.4 million.

On Saturday, Lagynos surged into contention under Irad Ortiz with a three-wide move around the final turn and drew clear for a near length score.

“Steve and his team have had him in great form for a long time,” Ortiz said. “It’s a big credit to them. He’s a very consistent horse and always runs his best effort. Everyone at the barn loves him and it makes it even more special every time I get to ride him.”

“He always runs with so much confidence,” Asmussen said. “He expects to win and today was another exceptional run. He’s now won four races in a row and is doing his best right now. He’s a barn favorite and everyone appreciates how hard he tries every time.”

Lagynos has been a real star for Steve Asmussen, with his wins this year also comprising the Grade 2 Muniz Memorial Stakes, Grade 3 Fair Grounds Stakes and Opening Verse Stakes. Equally effective on turf and dirt, the 5yo son of Kantharos was also successful in the 2024 Grade 3 Commonwealth Cup at Churchill Downs and last year’s Tapit Stakes at Kentucky Downs alongside a series of stakes placings.

Purchased as a Keeneland September yearling out of the Valkyre Stud draft, Lagynos was bred by Robert Spiegel out of Steamy, by Speightstown.
