back-to-back stakes scores for schumer bs yearling purchase lagynos

A switch to dirt failed to halt the progression of Schumer BS yearling purchase Lagynos, who recorded back-to-back stakes wins in the Woodchopper Stakes at Fair Grounds for Steve Rasmussen on Saturday.

The Kantharos colt powered through the slop to win by over two lengths under Edgar Morales from Tough Little Nut.

The win followed a breakthrough score for the tough colt in the G3 Commonwealth Turf Cup at Churchill Downs as well as placings in the G2 American Turf Stakes and G3 Transylvania Stakes. His record now stands at $760,553 from a record of 4-2-3 in 14 starts.

“He broke great, settled perfect behind the speed and when I tipped to the inside and he saw the clear, he took off,” said Edgar Morales.

“His turf form has gotten really good, he came back and won at Churchill the other day,” said Steve Asmussen’s assistant trainer Scott Blasi. “But we know he likes the dirt as well, he’s run well on it before, and this was a hard spot to miss. He’s versatile.”

Lagynos was purchased by Chad Schumer for $200,000 out of the Valkyre Stud consignment as a Keeneland September yearling.

He was bred in Kentucky by Robert Spiegel out of Steamy, a daughter of Speightstown who is also the dam of G3 winner Vision Perfect.

His win came on the same day that Schumer BS $90,000 2yo purchase Almosalhemah won her second race, a fillies and mares handicap, at Riyadh for ALassail Stable. The daughter of Macho Uno continues a purple patch for her owner that also includes a win by My Map, another 2yo purchase, in Friday’s Prince Fahan Bin Jalawi Cup. Waqtuk (Not This Time), a $60,000 2yo purchase on behalf of ALassail Stable also won last week’s G3 Jockey Club Cup, while another 2yo purchase, Off The Map, was also the recent winner of the Gulf Cup at Riyadh; the daughter of Liam’s Map was bought for just $30,000.
