Schumer BS yearling purchase Lagynos became racing’s newest millionaire when breaking the track record in the Listed Keeneland Tapit Stakes at Kentucky Downs on Thursday.
All surfaces come alike to the Kantharos four-year-old, whose record for trainer Steve Asmussen ranges from a win in the Grade 3 Commonwealth Turf Stakes on turf to the Listed Woodchopper Stakes on dirt. Switched back to turf for the Tapit Stakes, Lagynos was much the best, winning by over 5 lengths under Jose Ortiz.
The win took Lagynos‘ record to 5 wins from 20 starts (with 9 further placings) for earnings of approximately $1.222 million.
After the race, Asmussen said Lagynos might run back in the $2 million FanDuel TV Mint Millions.
“That’s what I hope,” he said. “If they like the course, they like the course. We’ve got until next year to freshen him up. But I want to run him back, yes.”
Lagynos was bought by Chad Schumer as agent for $200,000 out of the Valkyre Stud draft at the 2022 Keeneland September Sale. He was bred by Robert Spiegel out of the Speightstown mare Steamy.
