Wathnan Racing’s Wafei, a Schumer Bloodstock yearling purchase, made a dazzling debut in Qatar on Saturday when taking the Al Rakayat Cup.
The four-year-old son of American Pharoah surged past his rivals in the home straight to win easily by three lengths and form part of an afternoon treble for trainer Alban de Mieulle and jockey Soufiane Saadi.
Wafei was purchased by Chad Schumer as a Keeneland September yearling and resold through Church Farm and Horse Park Stud for €185,000 to Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock at the 2023 Arqana May Sale in France.
He showed smart form for William Haggas at two when a close second to subsequent Belmont Grade 2 winner Legend Of Time on his debut at Haydock Park and latterly broke his maiden by almost ten lengths at Hamilton Park.
He is out of Flying, a Galileo sister to champion/Group 1 winners Misty For Me and Ballydoyle.
Wafei‘s win came on the same day that another Schumer Bloodstock yearling purchase, Al Moassess, won his second race in Saudi Arabia. The Street Boss colt was bought for $20,000.
